Church should be financed by believers, not state budget, says NGO

ZAGREB, Oct 7 (Hina) - It is estimated that a billion kuna is earmarked from the state budget for the Catholic Church, while there is not enough money for health, education, pensions and welfare, the David human rights association said on Monday.

The association pushes for the financing of religious institutions by believers and citizens who want to do so.

David said that what citizens paid for or financed through the state budget directly impacted their standard of living, asking the government to take a firm position and protect citizens and the state budget from "large financial contributions to religious institutions" and prevent the "harmful and inappropriate syphoning of money from the state budget."

"Religious activity in Croatia is financed through the involuntary contribution of all citizens, directly from the state budget, while many citizens do not use the services of the Catholic Church because they are not believers or interested in attending services and their children do not take religion class," David president Boris Stanojevic said at a news conference at which a campaign to stop Church financing from the state budget was presented.

He said citizens paid HRK 400 from the average salary annually for the Catholic Church.

"We advocate a consistent application of constitutional principles of separation of Church and state, and for the state to respect the constitutional values of secularity and equality of all citizens," Stanojevic said, adding that the legal order should be respected throughout the country, instead of parallel legal systems which were in collision with human rights charters, the Constitution, and the law.
