Josipovic visited Janjevo with Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga, who said at a meeting in Pristina earlier in the day that she would see that Kosovo Croats be given the status of a constitutionally recognised minority with one seat in parliament. Josipovic said he had discussed this also with Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and Parliament Speaker Jakup Krasniqi.
A Croatian delegation was received in the Janjevo church by the parish priest and the whole parish sang the Croatian anthem outside the Church of St. Nicholas.
Despite the warm welcome, they did not hide the poverty and the fact that the parish is dying away, with only 195 Croats left, as most have moved to Croatia during the 1991-95 war. Before 1991, Janjevo's Croat population was close to 9,000.
The parish, about 15 km from the Kosovo capital of Pristina, was first mentioned in 1303.
The children in the Janjevo elementary school are Croats, Albanians and Roma. The teacher said classes were taught in Serbian, although she expects the syllabus to be modified for the Croatian children.
On Saturday, Josipovic was scheduled to visit the Serbian monastery of Decani and the Croatian contingent within the Kosovo Force peacekeepers.
