Croatia is law-based state, says CoE Parliamentary Assembly president

Autor: half
ZAGREB, Sept 4 (Hina) - Croatia has achieved outstanding progress since joining the Council of Europe (CoE), it is a state of law and a factor of stability in the region, CoE Parliamentary Assembly President Jean-Claude Mignon said in Zagreb on Wednesday.

Everything Croatia has done since 6 November 1996, when it joined the CoE, shows how much it deserves to be a member, he said in a joint statement after meeting with Croatian Parliament Speaker Josip Leko.

Croatia joined the CoE only a few years after gaining independence and the monitoring process ended four years later, which is outstanding, said Mignon.

He welcomed Croatia's role in the region, its efforts towards the region's stability and towards pulling neighbouring countries in the direction of the European Union, as well as President Ivo Josipovic's initiative for bringing together the heads of state from the region upon Croatia's EU entry on July 1.

For us, that means working on stability, said Mignon.

He also welcomed the work of Croatian MPs in the CoE Parliamentary Assembly, who act in line with the CoE mission - the preservation of human rights and the rule of law. And Croatia is a law-based state, he said.

Leko said today's talks also addressed the efforts of parliamentary democracy in seeking solutions to frozen European and world issues, including Nagorno-Karabakh, Cyprus, Syria and Arab countries.

We agreed that a political solution is the only possible solution to the Syrian conflict, said Mignon.

The talks also addressed the relations between the EU and the CoE Parliamentary Assembly. The two officials agreed that it is necessary to rationalize part of the work of some bodies so that the Assembly could get priority.

It is also necessary to transfer the Assembly's positions to the Croatian parliament, said Leko.

Mignon said the as president of the CoE Parliamentary Assembly, which comprises delegations of 47 countries, he had the obligation to inform the national parliament speakers of the Assembly's drives, projects and ambitions.

Mignon is also due to meet with Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic and members of the parliamentary foreign and European affairs committees.
