Hungarian Consulate General reopened in Osijek

Autor: half
OSIJEK, Sept 3 (Hina) - The Consulate General of Hungary was reopened in the eastern Croatian city of Osijek on Tuesday.

It was first opened in 2002 but was closed four years later under a decision by the then Hungarian government.

The parliamentary state secretary at the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Zsolt Nemeth, said the Hungarian government in 2006 temporarily closed the consulate in Osijek, alongside several other diplomatic missions, because of the moral and economic situation in Hungary at the time.

Nemeth said the reopening of the Consulate General in Osijek was evidence of Hungary's coming out of a decade-long political and economic crisis, because the reopening of other diplomatic missions was also planned.

He said Hungary and Croatia shared 800 years of history and value systems, in which minorities, which he said enjoyed an excellent position in both countries, played a significant part.

Croatian Deputy Foreign Minister Josko Klisovic said "consulates are opened for people, while other affairs of the state are dealt with by embassies," and that the Hungarian national minority in Croatia was a big link between the two countries.

"We are proud of the many Hungarians who live in Croatia after a long history, of their contribution to Croatian culture, politics and economy. We are happy that Hungary and Croatia have developed and regulated well relations in the protection of minorities and their rights, which is being cited around the world as one of the best models," said Klisovic.

Thanking Hungary for supporting Croatia in gaining independence and during NATO and European Union accession, he said the two countries would remain friends, with often compatible interests in the EU which they would continue to promote together.

Hungarian Ambassador Gabor Ivan said that reopening the consulate in a region with 10,000 Hungarians would strengthen regional and local border ties.

Consul General Antonio de Blasio said the consulate's task would be to meet the demands of the Hungarian ethnic community, including the possibility of acquiring dual citizenship which Croatia, unlike other countries, allows and participation in the region's economy.
