Croatian seafarers' union welcomes new Maritime Labour Convention

RIJEKA, Aug 19 (Hina) - The Seafarers' Union of Croatia welcomes the new international convention on seafarers because the document, which goes into force on August 20, will improve the living and working conditions of seafarers around the world, the union told reporters in Rijeka on Monday.

The Maritime Labour Convention defines a set of seafarers' rights and contains regulations stipulated by existing conventions and recommendations, said the union's secretary-general, Predrag Brazzoduro.

He said the new convention should prevent situations such as that of the Slovenian-owned ship Padna, which has been anchored in Kraljevica, Croatia, and whose seafarers have not been paid for months and have no food.
