Serbia calls on Kosovo Serbs to vote in local elections

Autor: half
BELGRADE, Aug 14 (Hina) - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic has called on Kosovo Serbs to decide as soon as possible about voting in November's local elections, while the state leadership has informed them that the status neutral elections are the best way of exercising their rights, the Tanjug news agency reported on Wednesday.

Representatives of north Kosovo Serbs announced at a meeting in Belgrade that they would decide on voting in the elections in the next few days.

After the meeting, Nikolic's advisor Marko Djuric said Serbia would be with them regardless of the decision they made, but stressed that forming status neutral municipalities in Kosovo "should be a way in which we, as a state and a people, will fight for our interests."

Djuric said no detail that could prejudge Kosovo's independence would pass and that Serbia would not allow the neutrality status of the elections to be breached in any way.

He was confident that the EU would not allow it either because that was guaranteed by the Brussels agreement on the normalisation of Belgrade-Pristina relations, said Tanjug.

Serb National Council president Milan Ivanovic would not tell reporters if Kosovo Serbs were likelier to boycott the elections or vote.

Commenting on the news from Belgrade, Kosovo officials welcomed the Serbian state leadership's call on Kosovo Serbs to vote in the local elections.

Kosovo Foreign Minister Enver Hoxhaj told Tanjug the call "confirms that Serbia is undoubtedly interested in normalising relations with Kosovo and, by doing so, opening its path towards European integration, because the integration of Kosovo Serbs and the stabilisation of the situation in the north are the main premises on Serbia's road to the EU."

Local elections in Kosovo have been called for November 3.
