Slovakia to open labour market to Croatians after July 1

Autor: half
BRATISLAVA, May 23 (Hina) - Slovakia will fully open its labour market to Croatian workers after Croatia joins the European Union on July 1, TASR agency said on Thursday citing a document from the Slovakian foreign and labour ministries.

According to the document, Slovakia need not fear mass arrivals of Croatian workers because of the similar economic development of the two countries.

Slovakia will probably not be attractive to Croatian workers, the document says, adding that unemployment in Croatia is 16 and in Slovakia 14 per cent. The average Croatian salary is 710 euros and the average Slovakian salary 805 euros.

In December 2012, only 146 Croatian workers were employed in Slovakia.

Slovakia has thus joined the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Estonia and Lithuania which have said officially that they will not apply restrictions on Croatian workers. On the other hand, certain restrictions have been announced by Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Great Britain.

The governments in Paris, Madrid, Ljubljana, Warsaw, Lisbon and Riga are still considering their final decisions on the matter but unofficially, according to indicators, no restrictions are expected in Poland, Portugal and Latvia, Hina was told in their embassies last week.
