Bosnia lags behind neighbours, High Rep tells UN

Autor: half
MOSTAR, May 15 (Hina) - The High Representative to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Valentin Inzko, called on the international community before the UN Security Council on Tuesday to continue supporting the representatives who wanted to move Bosnia forward, stressing that the country lagged behind its neighbours, Inzko's office in Sarajevo said in a statement.

Inzko said that while the other countries in the region were moving towards a brighter future within Euro-Atlantic institutions, Bosnian leaders continued not to meet their commitments towards citizens or the very limited expectations of the international community, as a result of which Bosnia lagged behind its neighbours even more.

I know they can do much better, he said, calling on Bosnian politicians to show courage for stepping forward.

According to his office, Inzko regretted that he had to report to the Security Council that over the last six months obstruction of the rule of law and the state's sovereignty and integrity as well as chronic political conflicts had prevented the authorities from effectively dealing with the material difficulties in which Bosnian citizens had found themselves because of the economic crisis.

At the same time, Inzko voiced optimism, believing the negative political trend of the last few years could be stopped and that in six months he would be able to inform the Security Council about progress in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

After addressing the Council, he was due to meet with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to thank him for his interest in the Bosnian situation and the UN's support for his mandate in Bosnia.

In a written report to the Security Council, Inzko in particular criticised the President of Bosnia's Serb entity, Milorad Dodik, accusing him of obstructing the survival of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Dodik, on the other hand, has accused Inzko of submitting partial reports on the situation in Bosnia.
