Ashton calls on Montenegrins to be constructive

Autor: half
PODGORICA, April 15 (Hina) - The European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, called on all political sides in Montenegro on Monday to be constructively involved in solving the situation in the wake of a presidential election.

We too closely listened to the representatives of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and I know the election results should have been verified by now. I want to invite all political sides to be constructively involved in this matter, Ashton told reporters at the European Commission's office in Podgorica.

Montenegro's State Election Commission said earlier today that it had rejected all complaints from the election headquarters of opposition candidate Miodrag Lekic who asked that the presidential election, won by Filip Vujanovic, be declared null and void because of irregularities.

After talks with Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and Foreign Minister Igor Luksic, Ashton voiced confidence that Montenegro would positively respond to and carry out all the necessary reforms.

I followed your progress towards the EU and the way you approached the negotiations opened last year. I want to congratulate you on the opening of the chapters referring to education, she said.

Ashton announced on Sunday that she would visit Montenegro, Albania and Macedonia this week, not ruling out the possibility to visit some other Western Balkan countries as well.
