Tomasic has won 25.95 per cent of the vote, ten per cent more than the second candidate on the slate, Andrej Plenkovic. Top of the list Dubravka Suica has won 12.5 per cent.
Social Democrat Picula has won more than 46 per cent of the vote, followed by the second candidate on the SDP-HNS-HSU slate, Biljana Borzan, and the sixth on the slate, Jozo Rados.
DIP president Branko Hrvatin said votes from 3,379 of the 6,696 polling stations had been counted by 21.45 hours and that "an extremely high percentage" would be counted by a press conference at midnight.
The election for Croatian MEPs ended in 38 countries by 10 pm. The last polling stations will be closed on the US West Coast at 4 am Croatian time.
