"Croatia is at a crossroads not only because of the difficult economic situation but also because this government, which hasn't been given the mandate to change Croatia's world view, is persistently doing only that," he said at a ceremony marking the 23rd anniversary of the HDZ's Split branch.
He accused the representatives of the incumbent government of attacking "our school system, where we are very sensitive, and we do mind who will teach our children and how."
"Look at what they are doing. What health education? First they went with civic education, yet many of them need civic education because they didn't attend catechism. Look at how aggressively they are attacking the Church, all our traditional values."
Karamarko criticised those who, as he said, had proclaimed Croatia an "accidental" and "absurd" state while disregarding that 15,000 people had given their lives for it.
He said the HDZ had "a big job ahead" in order to defend the values on which the Croatian state was founded. "We won't and mustn't betray our war veterans."
He criticised President Ivo Josipovic and Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic for not sending wreaths on the occasion of the recent anniversary of the death of first President Franjo Tudjman. "Those who never wanted or loved Croatia are downplaying it today and don't deserve to run it."
Karamarko wondered what made the ruling coalition left-ring if some of its leaders "are classic capitalists in the crudest sense because they exploit their workers and don't pay them."
He also said that one must concede that the HDZ had occasionally been thrown "on its knees" and "fallen into a depression" because of its mistakes. "We lost the 2011 and 2000 elections because voters, members and sympathisers punished us for thievery, given that some in the party charged their Croathood."
