Earlier prices had been supported by a higher close in north America on Friday and a firm Malaysian market on Monday. However, traders in Europe reported little interest. "There has been nothing special in the market. The only interesting thing is that despite the thin trade prices remain firm which shows strong underlaying fundamentals," said a trader. Monday was the last full trading day of 1996. New Year's Eve is a half day with business expected to finish around 1200 GMT. At the close crude palm oil was $7.50 to $10 up while refined palm oil was $5 to $10 higher with no further business reported. Lauric oils were mixed with coconut oil $5 up to $5 down and palmkernel oil $5 lower in neglected markets. Dutch soy oil closed unchanged to 0.50 guilders up and rape oil 0.25 guilders higher to 0.50 guilders lower.
