Arabica prices sold off sharply early in the day on signs an Arctic cold front that pushed into Mexico overnight skirted the major coffee growing regions. But industry-linked buying at the lows helped the market to stage a modest recovery later on. The market fell on "spec selling and the lack of frost in Mexico," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "That was the extent of it." But meteorologists warned Mexico's crop was not yet out of danger. Temperatures were forecast to drop to near freezing levels again early Friday in the northern fringe of the coffee belt, and could cause "isolated pockets of minor damage," said Smith Barney forecaster Jon Davis. Benchmark March futures fell 1.70 cent a lb on the day, to 110.20 cents, having traded from 109.75 to 112.80. The nearby switch was well offered throughout the day, as second-position May slipped 1.55 to 107.45. An estimated 8,959 lots were exchanged on the day. With the Christmas and New Year's holidays approaching, industry traders looked for the market to hover within a relatively narrow band over the next two weeks. Major support was identified at 105 cents basis March, while a move toward 115 cents on the upside would likely trigger heavy selling on the part of producers. 201104 MET dec 96
