Palm oil prices were supported by firm fundamentals on the Malaysian markets while soft oils were mostly unchanged to lower. Traders said palm oil was up on follow-through from Monday on the back of export figures, but trading in Europe was limited to a few shorts with little interest shown by other players. On Monday Malaysian cargo surveyor SGS released data for December 1-15 which put local palm oil exports at 406,924 tonnes against 298,862 during the same period in November. However, not all traders were convinced the rally was justified. "The export figures were good, but the reaction is looking a bit over done," one trader said. "However, when it comes to palm oil the Malaysian traders are in a league of their own and can do what they like with the market," the trader added. Crude palm oil closed $2.50 to $5 up while refined palm oil was unchanged to $2.50 higher. Only one trade was reported during the afternoon when Jan stearin fetched $395 a tonne fob Malaysian ports. Lauric oils were neglected with coconut oil $5 to $7.50 up and palmkernel oil $15 down to unchanged. Soft oils attracted some light trade towards the close with soy oil for Jan trading at 89, Feb/Mar at 91 and Aug/Oct at 94 and 94.50 guilders. Dec rapeoil traded at 91.50, Jan at 92.50 and Feb/Apr at 94 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Some traders felt most of the business was switching between soy and rape oil but could not confirm this. At the close soy oil was 0.50 guilders down to 1.50 guilders up and rape oil 0.25 guilders lower to unchanged. Based on sellers' prices the premium for rape oil over soyoil was 1.25 to 3.50 guilders at the close, against 2.75 to 3.25 guilders on Monday.
