"If we didn't have December pulling this market up, I am not sure where we would be," one trader said. With December going off the board on Wednesday, dealers said the trade moved to cover short positions, which sparked speculative buying in the outer months. Benchmark March delivery breached near-term resistance at 110.50 cents a lb, touching off buy-stops near 111.00 cents. March rallied to a high of 111.75 cents before a round of commission house profit-taking cut into gains, traders said. March futures settled up 1.35 censt, to 111.20 cents, ranging from 111.95 to 109.30. May rose 0.95 cent, to 108.30, while the back months gained 1.10 to 1.95. The December contract jumped 6.00 cents, to end at 129.40 cents, its highest settlement since September 1995. The December/March switch ballooned to 18.20 cents, up from 13.55 at the close Thursday. With the spot December contract's last trading day on Tuesday fast approaching, open interest in December still relatively high at 581 lots, the equivalent of about 150,000 bags of coffee. As of the close Thursday, the CSCE reported certified coffee stocks stood at only 2,321 bags in the week ended December 6. An additional 10,250 bags were certified for delivery sometime between December 9-12, and a further 14,750 bags were reported pending grading. No delivery notices were issued Thursday. To date, 11 delivery notices have been issued. "They are running up December because there are still 581 open positions," said Refco Inc. analyst Ann Prendergast. "And there is not nearly that much coffee certified." Traders await the U.S. Department of Agriculture's revised 1996/97 world coffee production estimate slated for release after the close of business on Friday. Analysts anticipated few changes from the June USDA figures, which put 1996/97 global output at 99.1 million 60-kg bags, up from 86.8 million bags the previous season. The USDA pegged top-grower Brazil's 1996/97 output at 27.5 million bags. Traders also await the U.S. Green Coffee Association of New York's November consumer coffee stock figures due after the close on Monday. Turnover reached an estimated 9,577 lots. 161038 MET dec 96
