Dealers said much of today's activity was technically driven, with the benchmark March contract getting through 109.82 cents a lb, the 200-day moving average. But persistant origin selling near the highs prevented March from breaching resistance at 110.50 cents, they said. March futures peaked at 110.25 cents, before ending at 109.85 cents, up 1.75 cents per lb on the day. May rose 1.85 cents, to 107.35, while the back months gained 1.55 to 1.80. Once again, the spot December contract posted the heaviest gains, soaring 4.40 cents, to end at 123.40 cents, its highest settlement in five weeks. The December/March switch blew out to 13.55 cents, up from 10.90 at the close Wednesday. With less than week to go before the spot December contract's expiry, open interest in December still relatively high at 682 lots, the equivalent of nearly 200,000 bags of coffee. On Monday, the CSCE reported certified coffee stocks stood at only 2,321 bags in the week ended December 6. An additional 5,500 bags were certified for delivery sometime between December 6-9, and a further 11,750 bags were reported pending grading in Miami warehouses. No delivery notices were issued Thursday. To date, 11 delivery notices have been issued. "Tightness in December was one factor (behind today's gains)," said Dean Witter analyst Steve Platt. "It may also be linked to a lower Brazil crop in 1997/98." On Wednesday, Santos exporter Icatu/Sumatra said Brazil's 1997/98 coffee harvest may fall to 24 million 60-kg bags compared with 27.65 million bags in 1996/97. Recent forecasts for 1997/98 Brazilian output have ranged widely between 17.8 million and 30 million 60-kgs of coffee versus around 27 million bags in 1996/97. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will release its revised 1996/97 world coffee production estimate after the close of business on Friday. In the past, the December report has included a preliminary estimate of the next year's Brazilian crop, but USDA officials would not confirm that a forecast of the 1997/98 Brazilian coffee crop would be published this time. Turnover reached an estimated 9,800 lots, traders said. 131108 MET dec 96
