Dealers said light commission house sell stops were triggered near 103.80 cents a lb in the active March contract, but persistent scale-down roaster interest limited losses and prevented a test of key support at 102.50 cents. March coffee ended down 0.75 cent at 103.45 cents, its lowest settlement since Oct 18, after trading from 105.10 to 103.00. Spot December finished 0.35 lower at 112.45, while the outer months ended 0.05 weaker to 0.15 firmer. Technically, traders said after 102.50, March's next support was seen at 100.00. Resistance was pegged at 105.50, then 107.50. Allendale analyst Jim Cordier said the market appeared technically oversold. While prices may weaken initially on Friday, he said values were likely to work higher. On the fundamental side, some Swiss traders said Brazil's coffee harvest could exceed 30 million 60-kg bags in the 1997/98 crop, up from around 27 million bags in 1996/97 and 12.5 million bags in 1995/96. Their Brazil estimate differs sharply from a recent forecast by a Brazillian coffee growers' association in Cerrado, Minas Gerais, which said the 1997/98 crop could fall to 17.8 million bags. In other news, Brazilian coffee exporter Unicafe said the country's carryover stocks in private hands could be as low as 39,000 bags at the end of the 1996/97(July-June) crop year, down sharply from the 876,000 bags estimated carried over from 1995/96. Turnover reached an estimated 9,940 lots, traders said. 061055 MET dec 96
