The closely watched December/March switch shrank to 11.10 cents today, down form 12.85 cents at the close Wednesday. "With the impending notice period people are taking profits as quickly as they can on the nearby switch," one trader said. Dealers noted some rolling of speculative longs out of December into second-month March ahead of the start of the month-long delivery period November 19. December ended down 1.95 cents a lb, at 117.20, after ranging between 119.90 and 116.35. March dipped 0.20 cent, to 106.10, while the rest closed 0.50 lower to 0.40 higher. One trader said steady roaster buying a the dips, coupled with producer selling near a recent high of 123.00 cents, could trap the December contract a 115 to 120 range in the short-term.
