Benchmark December futures finished down 0.90 cent at 114.20 cents a lb after trading from 113.20 to 115.30. Second-month March slipped 0.95 to 105.20, holding the nearby switch at a steep 9.00 cents. A round of trade and speculative buying carried the market to its intraday highs early on, but origin selling quickly capped the gains, dealers said. The remainder of the session was largely confined to position adjustments by day traders, as many operators took to the sidelines ahead of Green Coffee Associaton's September inventory report. "There was light origin selling toward 115 cents," said one dealer. "But people are basically neutral (ahead of) the GCA report." Most traders forecast GCA-tracked warehouse stocks to fall by 100,000 to 200,000 60-kg bags, as U.S. processors continue to deplete inventories ahead of the arrival of the bulk of Latin America's 1996/97 crop. U.S. consumer stocks have fallen steadily since 1993, hitting a seven-year low of 1.8 million bags in August this year. September stocks are due out at 1500 EDT/1900 GMT. Technically, December would need to break through 115 cents to attract significant fund buying interest. To the downside, sell stops were placed below 113-112.90 cents, and then at 111.50 and 108 cents. The day's turnover was moderate at an estimated 6,727 lots. 161146 MET oct 96
