Support was pegged at 10.60, the recent low for March. Speculative liquidation accounted for the bulk of the day's brisk volume, estimated at 25,446 lots, traders said. March settled at 10.73, off 0.13, having ranged from 11.05 to 10.71. The back months closed 0.09 and 0.07 lower. Market sources blamed today's weakness on strong world supplies. A USDA attache said India's sugar production could reach 16.7 million tonnes in 1996/97, up from a previous forecast of 14.1 million tonnes and the second-highest production level ever. Bagged sugar shipments out of Brazil's port of Paranagua have already exceeded the total exported in 1995, according to port authority data. As of Oct 14, 345,898 tonnes had been shipped compared with 337,734 tonnes in the 12 months of 1995. China said today it bought more than five cargoes of Thai raw sugar for March/May shipment, and Libya tendered to buy 14,000 tonnes of white sugar for November/December shipment.
