The market fell sharply despite principal Japanese interest coupled with support from most sectors of the trade, WI said. In merinos, 19 micron was up to 3.5 percent cheaper, while 20/21/26 microns were three percent cheaper. WI also said 23 micron was up to one percent dearer, with 24 micron slightly cheaper and 25 micron one percent cheaper. In merino skirtings, 19 to 22 microns were one percent cheaper. For crossbreds, 27 micron was 0.5 percent cheaper and 28 micron two percent cheaper, WI said. In cardings, locks were 1.5 percent cheaper and crutchings were up to one percent cheaper. Of the 14,464 bales offered, 13.6 percent were passed in, WI said. Several mills reported that buyer resistance to any increase in prices continued to keep a stranglehold on profit margins. Despite signs of an improvement in demand from Japan and interest from China remaining fairly constant, there were few reports of new business. One market source said impending seasonal increases in the size of raw wool offerings was likely to reinforce "highly cautious buying". 021018 MET oct 96
