Traders said the market was hanging in the balance ahead of the U.S. soybean harvest. "With the mixed weather there has been in the U.S. Midwest we fully expect damage to this years soybean crop, but until we find out just how much most people are reluctant to take fresh positions," said a trader. The discount for soy oil against rape oil widened slightly during the afternoon with Nov/Jan soy oil offered at 95 guilders and Nov/Jan rape oil at 100 guilders. Lower oilseeds rape crops in Europe and Canada and slow selling by farmers to the crushers is party behind the rape oil premium. Also some Northern European traders are switching from soy oil to rape oil in order to avoid soy oil made from genetically-modified soybeans. There was also talk that large processors were trying to secure old soy oil stocks which have been produced from beans that have not been altered, traders said. Traders said there was some concern among environmentalist about the modified soybeans, but at the moment these amount to less than two percent of the U.S. crop. "But having said we will accept the modified beans this year we could be faced with a lot more next year and we still will not know the effect on humans or animals," a trader said. At the close of business soy oil was 0.25 guilders down in a tradeless market while rape oil was unchanged after Oct traded at 96.75 guilders and May/Jul at 102.50 guilders a 100 kilos. Crude palm oil closed mixed at $2.50 up to $2.50 down while refined palm oil was $2.50 to $5 lower.
