Palm oil prices closed with a bias towards the downside in a little changed market. News that India's State Trading Corporation (STC) had bought a total of 12,000 tonnes of palm olein at its tender on Tuesday had little impact. The STC bought one parcel for first half October shipment at $585 a tonne cost and freight and a further parcel at $581 a tonne c and f for second half November shipment, traders said. Earlier news of a devaluation of the Pakistani currency had little effect in Europe, although it caused prices in Malaysia to fall, but they later recovered. Pakistan devalued the rupee by 3.79 percent against the dollar, causing concern among Malaysian players that it may lead to a reduction in exports to Pakistan as buyers there would be forced to pay more for imports. In Europe crude palm oil and refined palm oil closed unchanged to $2.50 down. Coconut oil attracted some light dealer trading during Tuesday afternoon with Oct/Nov fetching $710 and Nov/Dec $705 a tonne cif. Closing sellers were unchanged to $5 up. Palmkernel oil also attracted some demand with Sep/Oct and Oct/Nov both trading at $700 with closing sellers over. Soft oils finished higher but with little buying interest although Sep soy oil traded at 96.50 guilders and Nov/Jan at 97.50 and 98 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil closed 1.25 to 0.75 guilders up after Feb/Mar traded at 101.50 and May/Jul at 103 guilders. Informacije: Slavica Bocek telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 111031 MET sep 96
