In what traders said was mainly a technical retracement, prices settled unchanged across-the-board, after an early bid to test recent highs ran out of steam. The market got an early bounce from strong follow-through buying by commodity funds. But speculators and trade began liquidating long positions at the highs, driving the nearby September contract off its 126.50 peak. September ended down 1.85 cent per lb, at 121.30, having traded from 126.50 to 121. December yielded 0. 75, to 111.00. A hefty 12,808 lots changed hands on the day. Traders said steady liquidation on the September contract, which goes into delivery period next week, reassured traders that a dramatic pre-expiry squeeze was not imminent. 161020 MET aug 96
