Prices perked up early in the session on the back of strong buying by two big trade houses, dealers said. The market crossed a near-term resistance level at 12.38 cents, activating some light speculative stops, but the buying momentum fizzled before the market could challenge the closely watched 12.45-cent mark. "There was a little trade buying early, but in the afternoon it stayed in a three-point range," one broker said. Benchmark March futures rose 0.07 cent a lb to 12.36 cents, after trading from 12.32 to 12.40 cents. Second-position May rose 0.05 to 12.11 cents, while the back months gained 0.03 to 0.07. With many players sidelined between the Christmas and New Year's holidays, trading volume was light, at an estimated 11,184 lots. 301018 MET dec 97
