CSCE world sugar ends slightly higher, volume low
NEW YORK, Dec 5 (Reuters) - CSCE world sugar ended slightly
higher Friday, but volumes remained low, as the market continued
to consolidate following the rally to 16-month highs seen on
Monday this week.
"I'm surprised the sugar market has held up this well, given
there's been little further physical offtake after Russian
buying was seen last week," Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes
said.
CSCE March world sugar ended up 0.06 cent at 12.44 cents,
after trading a 12.33-12.44 cent range, but back months ended
slighlty lower.
The March/May spread edged out to 0.11 cents from 0.06 cent
last week.
Estimated total CSCE world sugar volume was around 9,000
lots, compared to Thursday's cleared volume of 13,501 lots.
The March contract's five day moving-average remains above
its 21-day average, and above its 55-day average, suggesting the
uptrend remains intact, analysts noted.
But in industry news, operators at Brazil's key port of
Santos returned to work on Friday morning after an eight-day
strike and vessels were starting to operate normally again, the
port authority CODESP said.
Sugar prices saw a 16-month high Monday this week, supported
by Russian buying, following a disappointing harvest of the
1997/98 sugar beet crop which was damaged by rain.
Last week London trade house C. Czarnikow forecast world
sugar production in 1997/98 at 122.8 million tonnes, raw value,
450,000 tonnes below its previous forecast and down from 123.1
million tonnes in 1996/97.
The Indian crop was seen smaller, but Brazilian production
was seen rising, along with Brazilian exports.
But when India's huge stockpile of sugar was excluded from
the equation, world sugar stocks are seen rising somewhat in
1996/97, analysts said.
And raw sugar supply in the current year was likely to be
much tighter than white sugar supply, reducing the white's
premiums over the raws.
