"There's nothing overly strong in the supply/demand fundamentals, but sugar prices are proving more resilient than I expected in the wake of good Russian buying in recent weeks," Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka said. CSCE March sugar ended up 0.02 cent at 12.12 cents a pound, after trading a 12.20-12.27 cent range. Estimated total CSCE sugar volumes were around 12,000 lots. Open interest in CSCE world sugar rose 3,167 lots Tuesday to 195,015 contracts, and open interest remains near the 205,705 contract high seen earlier this month, with funds still running a large net long position. Both hourly and daily momentum indicators are back to neutral levels after the bounce in prices this week, with the five day moving average just below the 21-day average, but above the 55-day average. Nearby CSCE world sugar futures traded up to a 15-month high around 12.40 cents late last month, but evidence of a plentiful European beet crop and good Brazilian sales took some of the tightness out of the market, analysts said. World sugar production in 1997-98 will be 123 million tonnes raw value, up slightly from the 122.7 million tonnes produced in 1996-97, the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimated on Wednesday. It said overall stability in global production was due to a combination of expected output increases in Europe, North America and Latin America. "This should offset reduced output in major producing countries in the Far East," the Rome-based agency said in its latest food outlook survey. FAO said sugar production from beets was expected to increase by about three percent and and contribute 38.2 million tonnes to global output. It said production of sugar from cane would decline by one percent to 84.8 million tonnes. 271117 MET nov 97
