Prices were barely changed on the day but the general run of the market was on the downside. Traders said the market had hardly developed following Thursday's holiday in Asia and to some extent a continued hang-over from the trade dinner in London on Wednesday. "A lot of people are still absent from the market, it is very thin," said one trader. Lower Chicago futures overnight and to some extent the easier dollar trimmed opening soft oil prices by around 0.50 guilders. However, in the rape oil sector demand appeared to regain control with sellers two guilders up to unchanged at midday. Data released by Malaysian cargo surveys Caleb Brett and SGS had no impact on the palm oil market. Cargo surveyor Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) Malaysia Sdn Bhd said it estimated Malaysia's palm oil exports for October at 700,351 tonnes against 698,615 tonnes for September, while Caleb Brett put Malaysia's October bulk palm oil exports at 678,951 tonnes against its estimate of 719,634 tonnes for September. The Malaysian Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority put official September exports at 721,291 tonnes. On a thin market following Thursday's holiday in the Far East crude palm oil was unchanged to $2.50 down after Dec traded at $545 a tonne cif, while products were $2.50 to $5 lower after Jan/Mar olein traded at $555 a tonne fob Malaysian ports. "Malaysian prices rallied early on a rebound by the ringgit, but this fizzled-out and they came back down again," said one trader.
