A fund-led buying spree drove prices to the day's highs early in the session, dealers said, but the rally was unable to gather much steam. Producer-linked selling provided strong resistance, as the market gradually retraced toward the unchanged mark. Bellwether March futures finished flat at 11.73 cents a lb, the bottom of their 0.12-cent trading band. Second-position May eased 0.01 cent to 11.74 cents while the rest of the board settled down 0.02 to up 0.04 cent. Volume remained exceedingly light, with the bulk of the day's 14,917 lot turnover posted during the first hour of trading. In other news, London-based trade house E D & F Man forecast a small world sugar deficit of 283,000 tonnes for the 1997/98 crop year, due largely to crop losses caused by the El Nino weather pattern.
