Spot September ended $15 higher, at $1,550, while the back months closed up $11 to $13. Cocoa prices headed higher at the opening, as expected, after gains in London overnight, traders said. They said London's continued strong performance helped lift New York. "We just followed London," said one trader. London's LIFFE December contract finished up 21 stg, at the session high of 1,075 stg after breaching key technical resistance at 1,069 stg. Light speculative profit-taking in New York, however, capped gains and prevented a breach of chart resistance at $1,570 per tonne basis December, dealers said. But some dealers were encouraged by the market's finish near the highs and said they expected to see follow-though on Thursday. On the charts, traders pegged December resistance at $1,585, followed by $1,600. Support was seen at today's low of $1,553. Fundamentally, traders said continued talk of an El Nino weather pattern adversely affecting world cocoa crops underpinned prices. There was talk a large trade house put out a friendly confidential report concerning El Nino to its "best" customers. One broker said El Nino may make certain grades of cocoa -- like those from Indonesia and Ecuador -- difficult to come by and differentials could climb. "With El Nino, some grades of cocoa will be hard to come by and premiums may rise," said one trader. "People are wary of giving up their stocks too early and with the September/December switch at $19 we are not seeing much cocoa for delivery against September." Volume reached an estimated 6,255 lots. 211028 MET aug 97
