Spot September arabicas rose 2.25 cents per lb on the day, to 180.20 cents, after ranging from 181.00 to 175.00 cents. Active December ended 1.10 cents higher, at 162.95 cents, while the back months closed up 0.90 to down 0.60 cent. September/December widened to 17.25 cents compared with 16.10 cents at the close on Friday. December/March 1998 stretched to 15.95 cents versus 15.75 cents the previous session. Coffee prices defied pre-opening expectations and headed lower at the outset, pressured by commission house selling on the heels of a slightly bearish stock report from the Green Coffee Association of New York. Supplies of green coffee stowed in U.S. warehouses rose in July by 219,000 60-kg bags, to 2,335,000 bags, the GCA reported after Friday's close. Industry expectations ranged from up 50,000 to 250,000 bags and traders said an increase was largely priced in market last week. "It was the old sell the rumor, buy the fact," said one trader. With September set to go into delivery period, traders said market participants would focus this week on liquidating or rolling positions ahead of the spot month's first notice day on August 21. As of Friday, September open interest was still relatively high at 5,372 lots. After Monday's close, the CSCE reported exchange-certified coffee stocks rose by 457 60-kg bags as of August 15, to 92,428 bags -- or the equivalent of about 370 lots. An additional 5,500 bags of coffee were pending grading, the exchange said. Traders said low certified coffee stockpiles combined with dwindling open interest and unimpressive volume would continue to make the market vunerable to sharp price swings. Total open interest as of August 15 stood at 20,058 lots, down 566 lots from the previous session. Volume on the day reached an estimated 5,150 lots. 190952 MET aug 97
