CSCE coffee recovers from session lows, ends mixed
NEW YORK, Aug 8 (Reuter) - CSCE coffee futures bounced back
from early lows to end mixed on Friday, as local short-covering
and light commission house buying erased most of the day's
losses, dealers said.
Speculator profit-taking on the heels of Thursday's rally
drove the September contract to a session low of 201.00 cents a
lb, but failed to pushed the spot contract through key
psychological support at 200.00 cents.
At the close, September stood at 205.85 cents, down 2.95
cents and just beneath the day's peak of 206.50 cents.
Second-month December rose 1.60 cents on the day, to 177.85
cents, while the back months closed 0.75 to 2.00 cents higher.
The September/December switch narrowed to 28.00 cents
compared with 32.55 cents at the close on Thursday.
December/March 1998 widened to 22.10 cents versus 21.25 cents
the previous session.
In what was mainly seen as a technical correction, coffee
prices fell from the outset. September gapped sharply lower --
surpassing an expected 1.00 to 2.00 cent lower opening call.
But some dealers said forecasts calling for cooler
temperatures this weekend and the middle of next week in
top-grower Brazil lent some support to the market and prevented
prices from slipping further.
U.S.-based forecaster Weather Services Corp said on Friday a
cool, high pressure currently in Argentina will pass out to sea
just south of Brazil's coffee belt in the next few days.
WSC said the system does appear large enough to bring cool
air into the region, but no damaging cold is expected.
Temperatures may average near to below normal through next
Thursday, although there is still no damaging cold weather
forecast, WSC said.
Technically, traders said September still faced support at
200.00 cents, with sell-stops building near 199.50 cents. On the
upside, resistance was seen at 210.00 cents.
Despite today's downturn, September coffee gained 20.90
cents on the week -- or about 11 percent.
While some traders were encouraged by this week's gains and
today's recovery, other traders continued to note the market's
recent movement has been amid unimpressive volume and low open
interest. Total open interest as of August 7 stood at 21,359
lots, down 151 lots from the previous session.
Volume on the day was light, at an estimated 5,848 lots.
After Friday's close, the CSCE reported certified coffee
stocks rose by 3,190 60-kg bags as of August 7, to 94,119 bags.
No coffee was pending grading, the exchange said.
