Early high levels in copper and aluminium were not sustained once the August option declarations were concluded, and ring trading found the markets around their lows, against a background of customary pricing sales. "Zinc has performed OK, but the rest have been slow. It could stay that way for the rest of the day," one trader said. Zinc prices were bought keenly on dips towards the $1,500 level, with Far Eastern interest seen initially before a widening in the spread maintained the momentum. The cash/threes backwardation was back at the $100 a tonne level, having eased in to near $80 on Tuesday. Sensitive September dates were keenly sought, with Sept/one day around $15 backwardation, Sept/one week trading at $50, and Sept/Oct over $70. Traders said the trend was also encouraged by a 575-tonne stock decline, with no metal delivered into any warehouses. Last three months kerb business was at $1,512, up $14 a tonne from Tuesday's afternoon kerb close. Copper touched lows of $2,285 - an intermediate chart point - before finishing the kerb at $2,289, up just $3 from Tuesday. However, prices were below highs of $2,302 reached early. There is resistance expected around $2,310, while a 4,300-tonne stock rise highlighted slow summer demand and the magnet attraction of the recent steep backwardation. Cash/threes was at $20/22 backwardation by midday. Aluminium was pressured by cash pricing sales during the rings, as well as some post-option declaration selling. There were no surprises during the August declarations, traders said. Prices stabilised above $1,700/10 support, and concluded the kerb at $1,715, a $6 loss from Tuesday. Nickel's early advances on fund buying were not carried through, and trade selling, against a background of a 426-tonne stock increase, sent the market into reverse. Last business was at $7,235, down $25. Lead closed the kerb at $607, up $2, but looks vulnerable to a re-test of Tuesday's 22-month lows of $598. Trade was lacklustre throughout the session. Tin traded quietly at slightly lower levels, and was indicated at $5,550/70 by kerb close, down from a previous $5,585.
