"We thought the forecast of cooler weather would have been enough to take some of the steam out of Chicago, but it didn't and now most people are sidelined," said one trader. European sellers' response to Monday's firm Chicago close was muted by knowledge buyers were reluctant to follow. Traders said players were also wary of Chicago when trading was volatile on weather concerns. "We see the same thing happening year after year and people are taking the attitude that it's the harvest that counts, not what speculators think may happen," said another trader. A rebound by the Malaysian ringgit against the dollar and poor fundamentals depressed an already sagging palm oil market and at the close crude palm oil cif Europe was $5 down to unchanged while products were unchanged to $2.50 lower. In the soft oils sector Dutch soy and rape oil closed 0.50 guilders up. In light trading prior to the Chicago opening soy oil fetched 106 guilders for Nov/Jan and Feb/Mar. There was also a report that 112 guilders had been paid for Aug soy oil. Traders said the price seemed on the higher side, "but anything is possible on this market at the moment," said one. Dutch/EU rape oil traded at 103 guilders for Aug, 104.50 for Sep and at 106 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill for Nov/Jan.
