Dealer selling knocked as much as $12.50 a tonne off coconut oil prices while crude palm oil lost around $10 a tonne in the near positions. Rising production and slow exports have been hitting palm oil prices for some time, with only the recent firmness of the dollar underpinning the market. "Nearby crude palm oil came under a lot of pressure this afternoon and to tell the truth it is very difficult to tell just where it is at the moment," said one trader. News that the Cameroon is to halt palm oil exports for six months to protect local supplies had no impact on the market. Coconut oil has also been under pressure from good output and has been hit in recent days by waves of origin selling, but this afternoon dealers were the main sellers with consumers bargain hunting. The dollar continued to control soft oil prices this afternoon with further upwards pressure coming from rising Chicago futures on weather concerns. Forecast of hot dry weather this weekend pushed the market higher, but U.S. meteorologists said the heat-wave would be short-lived with long-range outlooks suggesting a cool-down by late Sunday or Monday. At the close Dutch soy oil was one to 0.25 guilders up after Nov/Jan traded at 104.75 a 100 kilos. Rape oil finished 0.75 to 1.25 guilders higher after Aug fetched 103.50 and Nov/Jan 104.75 and 105 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Crude palm oil closed $10 to $5 down after Jul and Aug both traded at $482.50, Sep at $485 and $482.50 and Oct/Dec at $495 a tonne cif. The lowest offer on the market was Aug at $477.50 a tonne with bids of as low as $472.50 against it, traders said. Products were unmoved from midday with RBD palm oil and olein $2.50 to $5 down. Coconut oil shed $10 to $12.50 a tonne after Jul/Aug traded at $565 and $560, Sep/Oct at $565, Oct/Nov at $562.50 and Nov/Dec at $562.50 a tonne cif. Palmkernel oil sellers were $10 down after Aug/Sep traded at $560. Aug/Sep was also reported to have traded as low as $552.50, but traders could not confirm this. "In this crazy market anything is possible, but we cannot confirm it," said one. Informacije: Zoran Popijač telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 241025 MET jul 97
