The speculators, led by commodity funds, were influenced by the charts, with downward momentum accelerating once the benchmark October contract broke through key chart support at 11.00 cents per lb. Steady scale-down trade buying prevented October from breaching the next support level at 10.95-10.90 cents. October raws closed at 10.97 cents per lb, down 0.15 cent on the day, having ranged from 11.12 to 10.95 cents. Second-position March fell 0.10 to 11.16 cents, while the back months finished down 0.03 to 0.08 cent. New York sugar prices came under pressure on the open as producer sales were noted near unchanged until October's breach of the 11.00-cent level prompted speculative sales. Traders said the October contract could test support on Wednesday but added that the trade is likely to remain an aggressive buyer underneath and hold the contract over the key level. An estimated 23,523 lots changed hands on the day, compared with Monday's official 4,278 lots. Open interest in the benchmark October contract fell by 54 lots to 92,363 lots, as of Monday.
