The benchmark September contract fell 2.10 cents a lb on the day, to 162.00 cents, after ranging between 166.00 and 161.00 cents. Spot July, which expires in a week, rose 1.00 cent, to 187.00 cents, while the outer months closed down 0.25 to 2.65 cents. The July/September switch widened to 25.00 cents compared with 21.90 cents at the close on Friday, while the September/December switch narrowed to 12.50 cents from 13.10 cents. Traders said the recent build in exchange-certified coffee stocks and mild weather in top-producer Brazil to continue to dampen sentiment. CSCE reported after Monday's close that certified coffee inventories rose for the seventh day in a row, increasing by 1,644 60-kg bags as of July 11, to 72,245 bags. An additional 19,324 bags were pending grading, the exchange said. CSCE also reported that out of 2,822 bags graded only 774 bags passed exchange approval. Some dealers said the market is likely to continue to trade quietly ahead of the Green Coffee Association of New York's monthly stock report due on Tuesday at 1500 EDT. They expected inventories to be little changed in June, with most preliminary estimates coming in at plus or minus 100,000 bags. In May, GCA reported stocks of green coffee in U.S. warehouses rose by 122,000 bags, to 1,977,000 bags. Stocks in June 1996 fell by 110,000 bags, to 2,161,000 bags. One trader, however, predicted the GCA data could show an increase of some 200,000-300,000 bags after the recent influx of coffee put up for exchange approval. "It is definitely not going to be down," he said. "Since last month we've seen about 80,000 to 100,000 bags come in for certification alone." Technically, traders continued to peg September chart support at 160.00 cents, followd by 158.00 and 155.00. On the upside, they said September faced resistance at 168.00, with the next level seen near 170.00. Turnover was light, at an estimated 4,402 lots. 150942 MET jul 97
