An estimated 4,307 lots changed hands on the day compared with Friday's official 9,300 lots. Market sources blame thin activity on a seasonal lull and neutral technicals. "We're seeing steady demand, it's just not that great," a sugar broker said, adding that "technically, we're not in an area to induce the funds to buy or sell." Dealers said short-covering by the trade was holding the benchmark October contract over 11.00 cents, where support has been pegged. Selling by Brazilian producers around 11.20 cents in October kept a lid on the market. The October contract settled 0.03 cent higher at 11.12 cents per lb, having ranged from 11.12 to 11.08 cents. Second-position March went out 0.01 cent firmer at 11.26 cents, while the back months closed 0.03 and 0.01 cent higher. Open interest in October fell by 472 lots to 92,417 lots as of Friday.
