Benchmark September arabicas fell 4.05 cents per lb on the day, to 175.45, after ranging from 185.00 to 170.00. Spot July finished 4.30 cents lower, at 194.65, while the outer months closed down 5.10 to 6.00. The July/September switch narrowed to 19.20 cents, from 19.45 cents at the close on Friday. Coffee prices came under pressure this morning on commission house selling but traders said September's inability to mount a successful challenge of major chart support at last week's low of 168.75 cents prompted locals to cover their short positions. September coffee also managed to rebuff a test of resistance at 185.00 cents, they said, which sent prices back into negative territory. Low total open interest has exaggerated market volatility in recent weeks, traders said. As of Friday, total open interest stood at 20,655 lots, down 354 lots from the previous session and less than half the total open interest seen just three months ago. Traders said a private estimate for Brazil's 1997/98 harvest weighed on sentiment today. Former U.S. Department of Agriculture agronomist, Leon Yallouz, pegged the Brazilian 1997/98 coffee crop at around 28 million 60-kg bags in his latest private forecast, Brazilian traders said. Other traders said they had heard the figure was 28.6 million bags. Yallouz, who could not be reached to comment on the estimate, is said to have previously put the 1997/98 Brazil crop at 27.5 million bags. Most Brazilian trade forecasts are between 23 million and 25 million bags, although the Brazilian government is working with around 22 million bags. Traders said a 28 million-bag plus estimate for Brazil's 1997/98 harvest confirmed the first USDA forecast of 28 million bags released earlier this month. Forecasts calling for continued mild weather in top-grower Brazil also dampened sentiment, traders said. No damaging cold is indicated over the next week in Brazil's coffee belt, although there may be some disruptions or delays to the harvest due to wet weather, U.S.-based forecaster Weather Services Corp said on Monday. Technically, traders continued to peg September support was seen at 168.75 cents. On the upside, September resistance was seen at 180.00 cents, followed by today's high of 185.00 cents. After Monday's close, CSCE reported certified coffee stocks fell by 900 60-kg bags as of June 20, to 46,425 bags. There were 3,100 bags pending grading, the exchange said. 240936 MET jun 97
