Aluminium firm, others drift in uneventful LME
LONDON, June 9 (Reuter) - Aluminium kept its grip on early
gains above $1,600 at the London Metal Exchange (LME) midday
session, but the other base metals quietly hovered on either
side of Friday's closing levels.
Forward buying during the European pre-market had propelled
aluminium prices to a high of $1,614 during a pre-market surge,
versus Friday's kerb close of $1,597.
A swathe of resistance in the $1,610-$1,620 area was proving
difficult to surmount, however, and three months prices settled
at $1,608 at the end of the kerb.
Copper traded in a tiny range and showed little sign of
probing the $2,500 resistance level or conversely testing the
downside.
Prices ended the kerb a mere $3 firmer at $2,490 after
moving in a band of less than $10.
"Copper is simply moving sideways in a $2,475-$2,500 range,"
a trader said.
"The volumes just aren't there in any of the metals. They're
bought up and sold down on practically nothing," he added.
Nickel settled $10 easier at $7,300 after wavering
indecisively on either side of the level. Traders said the
volume of news emerging on nickel output gave the metal
potential for a move in the near term.
The market was keeping an eye on the ongoing strike at
Inco's Sudbury operations which analysts said was supportive.
Traders also noted news that a recent cut in gas supplies to
Russia's Norilsk Nickel operations may affect production,
although it was not currently affecting nickel output at the
main plant.
Zinc and lead also came off slightly in light trading,
following on Friday's solid advances in both metals.
Zinc prices eased back $2 to $1,365, failing to attract the
speculative attention which on Friday had pushed it up to a
fresh 4-1/2 year high of $1,377.
Lead, which has been shadowing zinc, shed $4 to end at $638.
Tin similarly displayed none of Friday's speculative energy,
leading prices to drift $40 lower to $5,670.
Alloy was very quiet and last traded at $1,480 in the rings,
versus $1,470/75, and failed to trade on the kerb.
