A burst of commission house selling near the close pressured benchmark May to the day's low of 10.89 cents, well above support seen at 10.75 cents. "We have to get below 10.75 to see any kind of a real selloff," a dealer said. "There is no real desire or incentive to do anything one way or the other at these levels." A move above the recent high of 11.09 cents in May could spark some fresh speculative buying, but the producers are likely to provide resistance at each tick higher, floor sources said. May ended at 10.92 cents a lb, down 0.11 cent, while the back months finished 0.12 to 0.08 lower. The May/July spread grew to 0.27 cent from 0.26 on Monday's close. Volume was estimated at 14,030 lots compared with an official 13,740 lots on Monday. Longer-term resistance was seen at 11.20 cents and support at 10.50 cents in May. Floor sources reported dull activity for most of the session and cited the speculators as early buyers and late sellers. News that the U.S. Department of Agriculture pegged the 1996/97 stocks-to-use ratio at 14.0 percent had no impact on today's activity.
