In what traders said was mainly a continued technical retracement following last week's run-up to near two-year highs, prices settled sharply lower in volatile trading. "Basically, this is the first major correction the market has made," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "After the dramatic move we have had, I would not expect anything less." CSCE active May coffee plunged 9.75 cents -- or about six percent -- on the day, to end at 157.25 cents, after ranging from 165.70 to 154.00. Spot March also ended 9.75 cents lower, at 168.10 cents, while the outer months tumbled 8.25 to 11.90 cents. Speculators pressured the market from the outset as news that Colombian union leaders and government officials reached a deal to end a week-old public sector strike weighed on sentiment. "The market was overbought," said Dean Witter analyst Steve Platt. "And the end of the strike gave speculators another reason to take profits." The market's downturn accelerated, traders said, after sell-stops were touched off below 160.00 in the May contract. Local short covering pared gains at midsession, but another round of speculative liquidation late in the day drove prices toward session lows. March's impending delivery period on Thursday also added urgency to today's slide, Platt said. "With first notice day approaching, longs in March have to get out, particularly those positions held by specs," he said. But despite today's losses, traders and analysts said the market's bullish tone is likely to persist in the long term. "I expect good support because of the uncertainty about supplies," said Merrill Lynch's Ganes. "Stocks are still tight." Traders await the monthly Green Coffee Association of New York stock data due after today's close. Most operators expecting to see a build up of some 100,000 60-kg bags in January due to strong shipments from Brazil during December and a steady flow of Mexican beans into Laredo, Texas. 191019 MET feb 97
