Palm oil traders were sceptical about Malaysian export figures released earlier in the day by two cargo surveyors. Cargo surveyor Societe Generale de Surveillance (SGS) Malaysia Sdn Bhd said it estimated Malaysia's palm oil exports for January at 586,046 tonnes against 717,197 in December. Caleb Brett put Malaysia's January bulk palm oil exports at 616,372 tonnes against its estimate of 702,082 for December. Exports were higher than expected causing European traders to express doubts. "When you look at the figures released for the first twenty-five days of January, today's data doesn't make sense," said one. Traders said the jump from the 401,932 tonnes estimated by SGS for 1-25 January to 586,046 estimated on Friday did not appear to be possible. However traders said these were the figures and they would have to live with them until the official data is released by PORLA in February. "We have the figures, whether we believe them or not is another matter," said one trader. Although not talked about widely European traders believed that Indonesia had been in the market. "I don't think they were in the physical market on Thursday, but they were today," said a trader. At the close of business crude palm oil was $2.50 to $5 up while products were unchanged to $5 higher with no business reported during the afternoon. Coconut oil closed $2.50 to $10 up and palmkernel oil unchanged to $2.50 higher. Soft oils finished a tradeless session with soy and rape oil 0.50 to one guilder lower and with sellers at even money.
