The market set its range early, opening higher, filling a gap on the charts between 10.47 and 10.50 cents in March, and drifting around the highs for most of the session. The benchmark contract climbed to a recent high of 10.54 cents by midday, but was unable to sustain gains. By the close, prices tumbled from the highs and the March contract ended below the previous level of resistance pegged at the former gap. The contract closed at 10.45, up 0.06, traded 10.54 to 10.42. The back months settled 0.01 higher to 0.01 lower. Volume was estimated at a brisk 22,645 lots, with most of the day's action occuring early in the day. Dealers said fund buying in the March and May contracts and trade buying in the spreads gave the market an early boost. The failure of the contract to climb higher attracted speculative selling, particularly in the back months, and pressured prices just above opening levels. Trade selling was also cited throughout the session.
