March delivery ended 6.25 cents higher at 145.65 cents a lb after trading from 145.90 to 139.75. Second-month May finished up 5.65 cents at 140.60 cents, while outer months gained 3.60 to 5.95. "It was all fund buying," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "Stocks keep going down and the market keeps going up." A decline in U.S. certified coffee stocks underscored the supply shortage. CSCE's daily certified data released after Friday's close showed exchange inventories continued to dwindle, falling 543 60-kg bags as of Jan 30 to 21,051 bags. Talk coffee growers in second-largest producer Colombia may move to declare a strike this week heightened supply jitters. But a leader of the country's independent coffee growers' association, Unidad Cafetera Nacional, downplayed reports of a possible work stoppage. Jorge Enrique Robledo said about 500 delegates from 100 coffee-growing areas across Colombia would meet Wednesday to discuss a variety of demands, including longstanding calls for debt relief from the government. But contrary to Colombian news radio reports, he said the idea of a strike was not on the agenda. Today's gains came despite a bearish CFTC Commitments of Traders report, which showed a net increase in speculative long positions by 12,723 contracts to Jan 28, the most since 1994. "The longs just get longer, " one trader said. "It is feeding on itself now. It is a very good technical market." After the close of business Monday, CSCE reported certified stocks were unchanged to Jan 31 at 21,051 bags. However, 250 bags were pending grading in Miami. Volume Monday reached an estimated 10,113 lots. 041022 MET feb 97
