CSCE coffee soars to new highs, uptrend continues
NEW YORK, Feb 11 (Reuter) - CSCE coffee futures continued
their uptrend on Tuesday, as heavy speculative buying lifted
prices to fresh contract highs across-the-board, traders said.
"The market is fundamentally and technically positive,"
said Refco Inc analyst Ann Prendergast. "I cannot think of
anything exerting a negative influence on prices."
Nearby March delivery surged to a new life-of-contract
high of 166.50 cents per lb before a bout of commission house
profit-taking trimmed gains. At the close, March stood at
163.55 cents, up 4.90 cents a lb on the day. The session low
was 157.50.
Second-position May ended 3.10 cents higher, at 157.55
cents. The March/May spread widened to 6.00 cents compared
with 4.20 cents at the close Monday.
Traders said the market received a boost from news a
leading U.S. roaster raised retail prices.
Concerns a state workers strike in Colombia could disrupt
coffee exports at a time when U.S. inventories are low also
fueled the rally, they added.
Procter and Gamble's Folgers Coffee Co said Tuesday it
planned to raise the list price on its standard 13-ounce can
of coffee by 15 cents effective March 17, due to higher prices
of green coffee on the world's futures markets.
"I suppose it (Folgers price hike) is a confirmation of
the shortage they perceive," said Prendergast. "But a price
rise can limit gains because it can limit consumption."
In Colombia, union leaders representing 800,000 state
workers launched a nationwide strike on Tuesday. Although its
impact on the coffee sector was not clear, Colombian exporters
said they feared the strike could hit customs operations and
hold up shipments from some ports.
"The Colombia strike is agitating the market," Prendergast
said. "It may not be a long-term thing, but in the short-term
it probably will mean delays."
Technically, traders pegged near-term March chart
resistance at 167.25, followed by 169.75 and 174.25. To the
downside, support was seen at today's low of 157.50, then
155.00.
Volume was heavy, at an estimated 16,050 lots, up from
Monday's official tally of 14,678 lots.
