Traders and analysts said concerns a strike may interrupt the flow of coffee out of the second-largest producer at a time when inventories hover at extremely low levels have compounded supply woes. "It is still a tight situation and any reports on short-term disruptions is viewed as bullish," said Dean Witter analyst Steve Platt. "They do not have any buffer to absorb disruptions." Nearby March delivery surged to a fresh life-of-contract high of 159.75 cents per lb, before closing at 158.65 cents, up 7.60 cents a lb -- or five percent -- on the day. The session low was 149.50. Second-position May ended 8.45 cents higher, at 154.45 cents. Union officials in Colombia said Monday about 800,000 state workers plan to go on a national strike at midnight. Although the work stoppage is not expected to have an immediate impact on the coffee industry, Colombian exporters said they feared the strike could hit customs operations and hold up shipments from some ports. But while a state workers strike is unlikely to have a major effect on its coffee trade, Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes noted lower Colombian production figures for January were more worrisome. On Friday, Colombia's National Coffee Growers' Federation announced the country's production fell to 778,000 60-kg bags in January compared to 2.08 million 60-kg bags in January 1996. Although a federation source said that the figure appeared worse than it really was when compared to abnormally high production figures in the same month last year, Ganes said the output number could nonetheless point to a much smaller-than-expected harvest. "There is the potential for a small Colombia crop based on the production data," said Ganes. "778,000 bags is the lowest level during January in eight years. That translates into a crop of 9.6 million bags." In December, the U.S. Department of Agriculture pegged the 1996/97 Colombian coffee crop at 12.5 million 60-kg bags. On the charts, traders said March's close above 156.60 cents, a long-term resistance level on the weekly chart, cleared the way for the spot contract to test the 177.00 level. Volume Monday was heavy, at an estimated 14,560 lots. 111027 MET feb 97
