March delivery jumped 5.10 cents a lb -- or nearly four percent -- on the day, to end at 144.60 cents, after ranging between a fresh high of 147.80 and 142.85 cents. Second-month May ended 4.30 cents higher, at 138.90 cents, while the outer months closed up 4.10 to 4.75 cents. Speculators bid the market up from the opening, surpassing pre-opening expectations and setting fresh highs, on the heels of sharp gains on the London robusta market. Market sources said although no fresh fundamentals emerged Wednesday, projections for a smaller harvest in top-producer Brazil, coupled by news of possible crop damage due to heavy rains in Colombia, have heightened supply worries. "There has been heavy rains in Colombia and there is still concerns about the Brazil crop," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. Preliminary estimates by the Brazilian Commerce Ministry pegged the country's coming 1997/98 coffee crop between 18 million and 20 million bags, compared with an estimated 25 million bags a year earlier. In Colombia, agronomists said heavy rainfall over the last three weeks in the country's's principal coffee-growing regions are likely to be affected the main crop harvest which begins in October. But some market sources noted heavy downpours are fairly typical in Colombia at this time of year. "If it is raining in Colombia, it is normal," said Smith Barney analyst Walt Spilka. "The market is extremely overbought and at some point it is going to correct," he added. Technically, traders said the March contract would face strong psychological resistance at 150.00-cent level, while support was seen near 142.60 cents. Volume Tuesday reached an estimated 13,600 lots. 301133 MET jan 97
