"The prolonged strike in Colombia and the figures from Brazil circulating around give a lot of underlying support," an analyst said. "We are in the high consumption period and stocks are low, so everything adds up." CSCE March delivery ran up to a new life-of-contract high of 130.80 cents a lb before settling at 129.65 cents, up 0.40 cent. On the continuous weekly chart, March's finish was the highest in five months. Second-position May ended 0.05 cent firmer at 126.00 cents after reaching a fresh contract high of 127.00 cents. The outer months, which closed 0.65 to 1.30 cents higher, also set new contract highs. Prices headed higher at the outset despite a lower pre-opening call, as buying by the commercial sector pushed the market to fresh contract highs, traders said. But commission house profit taking erased gains, touching off light sell-stops in March below 129.00 cents and sparking a round of localing selling. March tumbled more than 2.00 cents before the selling dried up, prompting locals to cover their short positions. Traders continued to keep an eye on Colombia, where dockworkers continued their strike at the Pacific coast port of Buenaventura. Dockworkers will meet with government officials and cargo handling operators at 1500 EST/2000 GMT Tuesday in a bid to resolve the strike, a union leader said. The 3,000 dockers are looking for a wage hike and additional payments for social security, sickness and injury benefits. The work stoppage, which entered its seventh day Tuesday, has blocked shipment of 145,000 60-kg bags of coffee exports. a private coffee exporters association said. About 160,000 60-kg bags of National Coffee Growers' Federation exports have been snarled in the action. The market also viewed as constructive the latest 1997/98 Brazil crop estimate. The coordinator for Procafe, an arm of of Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, said Tuesday Brazil's 1997-98 coffee harvest is forecast at between 17 million and 21 million 60-kg bags. The Procafe comes on the heels of an estimate by the head of the primary commodities department at the Industry and Commerce Ministry, which put Brazil's 1997/98 coffee crop between 18 million and 20 million 60-kg bags compared with government estimates of 25 million bags the previous season. Technically, traders pegged March support at 126.00 cents, while resistance was seen near 132.00 cents. Volume was brisk at an estimated 13,677 lots. 221040 MET jan 97
