"This was the quarter supplies were supposed to come in and alleviate the tightness," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "With the Colombian situation and the Brazilian estimates it does not look like that is happening." CSCE March delivery ran up to a new life-of-contract high of 129.50 cents a lb before settling at 129.25 cents a lb, up 5.25 cents on the day. On the continuous weekly chart, March's finish was its highest in more than a month. Second-position May ended up 5.50 cents, to 125.95 cents, after reaching a fresh contract high of 126.50 cents. The outer months rose 3.75 to 5.10 cents. Prices headed higher at the outset, as news Colombian dock workers continued their strike at the Pacific coast port of Buenaventura underpinned the market. But traders said prices racked up heavier gains after the March contract breached key resistance at 125.00 cents, activating a series of buy-stops above that level. "The port strike in Colombia offered steady support early," said Dean Witter analyst Steve Platt. "Taking out stops over 125.00 brought in fund buying." The work stoppage, which entered its sixth day Monday, has blocked shipment of about 160,000 60-kg bags of coffee destined for export, according to the National Coffee Growers' Federation. About 60 percent Colombian coffee exports are shipped out through Buenaventura. Additionally, cross-country movements in Colombia were threatened by truck drivers who said they would launch a new strike in February for higher freight rates. Truckers asked transport companies and the ministry to honor an agreement reached at the end of an 11-day work stoppage in October. Colombia is the second largest producer of coffee after Brazil. In Brazil, the head of the primary commodities department at the Industry and Commerce Ministry said Brazil's 1997/98 coffee crop may come in between 18 million and 20 million 60-kg bags compared with government estimates of 25 million bags the previous season. Many traders said that while a smaller 1997/98 Brazilian harvest was viewed as bullish, it has generally been priced into the futures market. Earlier this month an Industry and Commerce Ministry official told Reuters that the government was working with a figure of between 18.5 million and 19.5 million bags for the 1997/98 crop. Later this week, traders will be looking toward Brazil, where an emergency meeting of ACPC members will be held on January 23. The council was called after African nations, backed by Colombia, expressed the need for exports between January and June this year to be cut further. Volume was brisk, at an estimated 13,940 lots. 211057 MET jan 97
